The Role of Family Reunification in Successful Reentry
Returning to the community after incarceration is about more than finding a job, securing housing or meeting the requirements of supervision. For many individuals, reentry also means reconnecting with the people who matter most: their families and loved ones.
Family reunification is an important part of the reentry process. Reconnecting with loved ones can provide individuals with stability, emotional support and a sense of belonging – factors that can help create a stronger foundation for successful reentry.
For parents, this may mean rebuilding relationships with children after months or years of separation. For others, it may mean reconnecting with a spouse or partner, siblings, parents, extended family members or other loved ones.
Reentry Is a Family Transition, Too
The impact of incarceration extends beyond the justice involved individual. Families may experience separation, financial challenges, changes in household responsibilities and emotional stress. When an individual returns home, families may also need support as they rebuild relationships, establish new routines and adjust to life together again.
Research has highlighted the importance of family and social connections during reentry. Strong support systems can provide both emotional and practical resources as individuals navigate the challenges of returning to their communities.
Family reunification, therefore, is not simply about bringing loved ones back together. It is about helping individuals and families rebuild healthy connections and access the support they need to move forward.
Connecting Individuals and Families to Support
Across the state, The Reentry Coalition of New Jersey’s agency members provide services that help individuals navigate reentry while strengthening connections with their families and communities.
Volunteers of America Delaware Valley: Garrett House
Volunteers of America Delaware Valley operates Garrett House in Camden, one of New Jersey’s specialized female Residential Community Reintegration Programs (RCRPs).
Garrett House provides personalized reentry services designed to meet the unique needs of women returning to their communities. Services include family reunification and support, mental health counseling, addiction treatment and employment placement.
New Jersey Association on Correction: Millicent Fenwick House
New Jersey Association on Correction operates Millicent Fenwick House in Paterson, another specialized female RCRP in New Jersey.
The program provides customized reentry services, including family reunification and support, life skills development and counseling to help women navigate their transition back into the community.
Reentry Starts With Connection
Successful reentry is rarely something an individual accomplishes alone. Family, friends, service providers, employers and community organizations can all play a role in creating a strong foundation for a successful return.
Through family reunification services and other reentry supports, The Reentry Coalition of New Jersey’s members help individuals reconnect with loved ones, address barriers to stability and, ultimately take meaningful steps toward their future.
